A BRIEF HISTORY
Trewallyn Nursery has now been established in the Rose industry for 56
years, specialising in the supply of rose plants through mail order to
gardeners everywhere. It all began back when,--
Neville & Elsie Trebbin in partnership with the Wallace family of Sth.
Bundaberg established Trewallyn Nursery in 1950. Within a few years, Neville
and Elsie bought the land from the Wallace’s and successfully built the
business into a Rose, Fruit Tree, and Shrub Nursery, also growing seedlings
and cut flowers.
In 1960 when flood waters necessitated the re-location of the nursery, an
acreage was purchased at Alloway (10 km south of Bundaberg) of good sandy
red loam on which the roses and fruit trees were grown and the fruit trees
were supplied to orchards for many years.
In 1950 when the first catalogue was produced, it contained only 150
varieties of roses. Some of the most popular roses back then, that are still
available today include “Peace, Apricot Queen, Crimson Glory, Talisman”.
Sadly, many other rose varieties have become extinct as their popularity
diminished.
Today, we grow approximately 550 rose varieties ranging from the
latest releases such as Ashram, Red Pierre and Ulysees to many
of the old favourites such as Iceberg, Blue Moon, Double Delight and the
oldest rose still grown is Souv. de la Malmaison which has been around since
1843.
In 1993, Neville and Elsie retired and their son Allan now holds the reins
and following the tradition set out before him, “To provide good quality
plants to the customers”
Today, the nursery mainly concentrates on producing rose plants and just a
few fruit trees.
